The Virtual Communities project involves researchers from The University of Queensland, RMIT University, and the University of Technology Sydney.

This project examines how collaboration occurs within different types of organisations, particularly with respect to idea generation and idea evaluation.

Within the VC project there are three main areas of research focus. Firstly, how do collaborators understand themselves and their role within the task, project or organisation and how does such an understanding impact on the task/ goal/vision itself? Secondly, what are the best approaches to study collaborative work within differing contexts? And finally, what tools and techniques can be used to support collaboration within those contexts?

This research was conducted within the Australasian CRC for Interaction Design (ACID), which is established and supported under the Australian Government’s Cooperative Research Centres Programme.
